The History Of Boho Style & How to Wear it Today

Boho chic style has been a pillar of the fashion world for centuries and, even now, it remains a go-to look for free-spirits everywhere.

As connoisseurs of modern day boho fashion, we love delving into the rich history behind the aesthetic.

Join us as we explore the origins of boho styling and stick around for some top tips on how to wear it today.

The History of Boho Style

The History of Boho StylesThe History of Boho Styles

The 1800s - The Origins of Bohemian Culture

Bohemian culture is believed to have been founded in the 1800s, but there are many different theories as to how it all started.

Some claim it began as a counterculture following the French Revolution; others believe the word “Bohemian” was a disparaging term used to describe Romani people. At the time, Romani people were believed to have travelled to France from the medieval kingdom of Bohemia.

Wherever the term came from, the meaning stayed the same. It was used to describe a section of society that lived a free and unconventional lifestyle. Bohemians were often artists and vagabonds, who wandered from place to place, and their free-spirited attitudes were reflected in their wardrobes.

Women abandoned their tight corsets for flowing gowns and peasant blouses. Men donned clothes that appeared shabby and ‘worn’, opting for soft collars, and loose jackets over tailored blazers

1920s Boho - An Era of Fashion Freedom

The 1920s kindled a new era of fashion freedom and, though the flapper style took the world by storm, the boho look thrived amongst artists and free-thinkers.

The Bloomsbury Group – a community of British artists, writers, and intellectuals- forefronted the revival of boho style.

Bloomsbury women often wore loose, flowy blouses with ruffled necks, or chiffon dresses paired with long overcoats. Their style was characterised by bold, artistic colours and patterns. From beaded necklaces to embroidered bags, their accessories were often handcrafted.

Some members even embraced androgynous fashion, styling breeches or trousers with leather jackets or even men’s blazers

This British Bohemian aesthetic has continued to influence modern day fashion and to inspire designers like Dior and Burberry.

The 1960s & '70s - The Rise of Hippie Culture & Boho Chic

The 1960s and ‘70s saw the rise of a ‘hippie’ counterculture led by young men and women, who felt disillusioned with modern society. Women felt empowered to get creative and express themselves through their clothing.

Sixties and seventies boho looks called for floaty fabrics and textured layers. Boho women favoured maxi dresses and long skirts which featured exotic prints and vibrant colours.

Boho styles even made it into mainstream fashion with more casual elements, such as halter tops and bell-bottom jeans. Jeans were often embroidered with peace signs and slogans as symbols of rebellion.

Accessorising was the key to this aesthetic. Outfits were often layered with shawls, made from billowing fabrics like velvet or chiffon, which were draped over the shoulders for a striking effect. Taking inspiration from western styles, ‘70s boho outfits often included suede ankle boots. Gladiator sandals brought a more feminine twist.

Bags and jewellery had a handcrafted feel. Women would often opt for beaded bracelets and earrings. Slouchy handbags were decorated with charms and patches.

Some of the most iconic stars of this era were inspired by boho trends, from Cher to Stevie Nicks. So, it’s no surprise the ‘70s is the era we think of when we hear the words “boho fashion.”

The 21st Century - A Boho Revival

Boho chic styles may have dipped in and out of fashion since the 1970s, but the love for this look has never truly died. You’ll still catch supermodels rocking kimonos and kaftans on the runway, and music lovers bringing the spirit of boho to their festival looks.

Though 21st century boho has moved on from peasant tops to wrap dresses, it’s still a colourful, carefree aesthetic designed for those who like to live life by their own rules.

How to Wear Boho Styles Today

Whenever Boho chic styles come back into fashion, they’re fresher, brighter, and even more creative than before. Recently, Boho style has been all about relaxed shapes and tranquil shades. The new bohemian attitude is all about slowing down and moving through life at a pace that feels right for you.

Fabrics that Go with the Flow

To wear boho styles today, focus on pieces that let you move with ease – think loose-fitting tops with raglan sleeves, or a modern maxi dress that swishes with every step. To give your outfit that tranquil feel opt for warm tones i.e. rust, sage green, and beige.

Take Inspo From Your Favourite Eras

If you've got a favourite era from boho history, take some inspiration for your modern day look. If you're inspired by 1800s boho, look for a peasant blouse with unique embroidery and tassel ties; if your look is more of an homage to the '70s, choose fabrics with ditsy or paisley prints.

Layers that Bring the Drama

Layering is still a key part of the look. Drape a poncho or wrap over your shoulders to bring that creative, artisanal feel to your outfit. For a casual look that's just as striking, a boutique denim jacket will do the trick.

Ground It with Modern Basics

Balance the vibrant prints and embroidery with everyday basics. For example, you could pair a boho skirt with a simple tank top or style your floaty tunic with your favourite denim jeans.

This way, you can wear the boho clothing you love without looking out of place in a modern day setting.

Accessories & Footwear for the Finishing Touch

Western boots are still popular with boho lovers, and it’s not hard to see why but, if you’re looking for an elegant twist, you could swap them for block heels.

A bohemian look isn’t finished without some statement accessories. Stick to that handcrafted feel by choosing beaded bracelets and necklaces, or even some gold drop earrings for a more vintage bohemian style.

Slouchy bags have been an iconic part of this look since the 2000s, and they’ll make the perfect finishing touch for your modern day boho aesthetic.
