There are two types of waistcoats, each designed for a different occasion. Single breasted waistcoats are the most common style. They're a little more relaxed, making them perfect for casual and semi-formal occasions. We love a single breasted waistcoat as they're so easy to wear! You can pair them with everything from graphic tees to leather jackets.

Double breasted waistcoats are made for formal occasions. Sported by dapper gentlemen for centuries, they're the perfect companion for a tailored suit. That doesn't mean there's no room for them in a casual wardrobe. In fact, double breasted waistcoats are the perfect way to add a touch of timeless sophistication to your smart casual looks.

What you wear under your waistcoat depends on two things: the style you want to achieve and the event you're wearing it to.

A shirt is the classic choice and it's a foolproof formula. Choose a well-fitted dress shirt in a crisp white shade (floral linings and button details will add pops of personality). For the waistcoat, you have a choice to go classic with a traditional solid colour, or you can let your sense of style take centre stage with a brightly coloured waistcoat in a bold pattern.

Graphic t-shirts are a great way to inject some fun into your waistcoat outfit. Choose a colour that complements the shade of your waistcoat and a graphic print that suits your style. Rockstars and fashion icons have been rocking the waistcoat and t-shirt combo for decades and it never fails to make a statement.

For a more rough around the edges style, wear a henley under your waistcoat. A customised henley top, with details like patches and wash effects, brings a rebellious vibe to your outfit. Add a black waistcoat and a leather jacket and you've got an effortlessly cool look.

One of the things we love most about waistcoats is their versatility. When styled just right, they can be worn for any occasion.

Formal occasions, like weddings and black tie events, are the most common places to wear a waistcoat but it can still be a challenge to perfect the look. Our top tip is to base your waistcoat around your suit.

If you're wearing classic tones (black, white, grey, or navy), choose a double breasted waistcoat in a standout shade i.e deep red or vibrant green. The eye-catching contrast this creates will make you stand out from the crowd but it's not so overwhelming that you stick out like a sore thumb. Vice versa, if your blazer is already striking, pick a waistcoat in a neutral shade. 

Finish the look by accessorising your waistcoat with details like chains and pocket squares.

Casual dress codes give you a bit more freedom and a lot more comfort. Swap the tailored trousers for denim jeans or chinos, these won't only feel relaxed but their rugged texture will bring a devil-may-care attitude. Choose a funky shirt, then pick a single breasted waistcoat made from textured fabrics like tweed or corduroy. Add a jacket over the top and you'll be ready for everything from gigs to beer garden catch-ups.

Waistcoats can also work across all seasons. In winter, they keep you warm without adding extra bulk; in summer, they make an excellent replacement for jackets and blazers.
