Behind the Seams: What is Jersey Fabric & How to Wear Jersey Tops

Jersey has long been one of the most popular fabrics for casual, everyday clothing.

Known for its softness and stretchability, there's no wonder it's one of our go-to materials for designing flattering, feel-good clothes for women.

But what exactly is jersey fabric? This article is here to uncover the mystery behind this fashion staple, and to give you some tips on how to style our fabulous jersey tops along the way.

What is Jersey Fabric?

Despite what the name might suggest, this isn't one specific material. Jersey is a knitting technique in which multiple yarns are knitted into a single loop to create that signature stretchiness.

Though they were initially made from wool, jersey fabrics can be made up of a variety of different materials, such as cotton, rayon, and polyester.

Different blends can produce varying textures, meaning it can be used to make a whole range of clothes. For example, brushed jersey fabric is great for making jumpers, whilst cotton jersey fabric is perfect for t-shirts and summer dresses.

What is Cotton Jersey Fabric

Today, jersey fabrics are often made of either cotton or cotton-blend materials combined with a small amount of polyester and elastane.

Not only is cotton jersey fabric breathable, but its ability to hold its shape makes it a great option for all kinds of garments.

The History of Jersey Fabric

As you might've guessed, "Jersey" gets its name from the Island of Jersey in the Channel Islands, where the fabric is thought to have originated from.

Originally, it was designed to protect fishermen from the harsh climates. Later, it became the go-to for underwear and sportswear, but it wasn't until 1916 that jersey was used in everyday outfits.

It was French designer Coco Chanel who revolutionised women's fashion by using jersey fabrics to create sporty, casual-chic clothes that prioritised freedom and functionality, and defied the restrictive, corseted styles women were expected to wear at the time.

Designers fell in love with the fabric and, since then, it's been used in everything from pyjamas to t-shirts and dresses.

What are the Benefits of Jersey Fabric?

If we told you all the benefits of jersey fabric, the list would be endless. So here are just a few reasons we love wearing this timeless material.

Comfort and Stretch:

The biggest benefit to wearing jersey fabric is that it's super soft and it's designed to move with you. So, you'll be able to go wherever the day takes you, without feeling restricted by your clothes.

Breathable and Versatile:

Most jersey fabrics are soft and absorbent, making them ideal for battling autumn rain. However, their breathability makes them perfect for spring layering too! So, if you're looking for clothing you can wear season after season, jersey is your answer.

Easy to Wear, Easy to Wash:

One of our favourite things about jersey fabric is that it's an easy-care material. Not only is it machine-washable, but it rarely needs ironing.

How to Wear a Jersey Top

Now you know what jersey fabric is, it's time to get styling!

We love a versatile piece that you can style over and over again, so it should come as no surprise that we've got a jersey top to fit every moment.

From graphic t-shirts to elegant cowl necks, our spring collection has a range of chic and comfortable styles that'll bring colour and confidence to your wardrobe.

Need some inspiration before you dive into our collection? Let's take a look at some of our favourite ways to wear a jersey top.

How to Wear a Graphic T-Shirt

A graphic t-shirt is the ultimate way to wear a jersey top for weekends and casual occasions – especially when it's a Joe Browns tee. With tonnes of unique and colourful prints available, they're not only cosy, but they're full of personality too.

There are so many ways to style a graphic t-shirt, but one of our favourite ways is to pair it with capri trousers. It's a chic retro look that blends softness and structure. Light and easy to wear, it's the ideal outfit for laidback spring days.

Finish this jersey top style by adding a denim jacket and some bold trainers.

Jeans and a Nice Top

When it comes to day-to-night styles, jeans and a nice top reigns supreme. It's such an effortless yet stylish combo, and it's the perfect excuse to flaunt your new jersey top.

Skinny jeans and dark-wash denim work best for this look, but any jeans that make you feel good will work beautifully. You could even opt for distressed denim to give your outfit some edge.

Mesh jersey tops are a great choice as they strike the perfect balance between relaxed and elegant. Complete your jeans and a nice top look with a leather jacket and some western boots, and you're sure to stand out from the crowd.

The Perfect Base for Layering

Lightweight and warm, jersey tops make the perfect base for layered looks. From corporate-chic ensembles to boho styles, there are so many combinations to try.

For example, you could style a white jersey top under a tailored jacket, with jeans and sleek heels, for an office look that's equal parts comfortable and polished.

For a more free-spirited aesthetic, wear your top with a flowing maxi skirt. Choose a skirt with a bold, colourful print and a jersey top to complement it. Then, throw on a light cardigan to beat the spring breeze.
