What to wear on a cruise

Cruise outfits fall into three categories: port day clothes, sea day clothes and evening clothes.

A port day is a day of exploring the shore, and what you wear depends on your chosen port activities. To visit tourist attractions in style, pick out a practical but pretty ensemble. A lightweight blouse paired with shorts and sandals or comfortable pumps will allow you to wander comfortably. 

A port day spent at the beach calls for similar attire to a day at sea. Some sensational swimwear paired with a stylish cover-up like a kimono or popcorn knit. What to wear in the evening on a cruise 

Embrace the glamour of a cruise with magnificent evening wear. A cocktail dress or graceful maxi never looks out of place as you swan along the deck, especially when paired with heels.

Another fabulous option is a jumpsuit, offering all the glamour of your favourite party dress when worn with glitzy accessories. A matching shoe and handbag set will add an extra special touch to your evening cruise look, too. 

Is there a dress code on cruise ships?

While cruise ships may have been strictly formal in the past, nowadays many are far more relaxed. At the same time, there are still ships that remain more traditional in their dress codes. Check your ship’s dress code before you sail to enjoy your trip to the fullest. 

What’s most common is that there won’t be a dress code for the ship overall, but certain venues, bars and restaurants on board will be more formal than others. On top of that, certain occasions and evenings on board, such as a captain’s dinner, call for formal attire.

Can you wear jeans on a cruise? 

Unless your ship's dress code is strictly smart or formal, jeans should be absolutely acceptable attire. Pair them with a patterned blouse or a lightweight embroidered tunic to dress them up with holiday flair. 

If cruising in particularly warm weather, though, we advise looser and more flowing trousers or shorts to keep cool.
