If you’ve been outside lately, chances are you’ve seen early noughties-inspired looks cropping back up. Baggy jeans, large hoodies, big jumpers and larger-than-life accessories – yes, we’re talking about the oversized clothing trend!
Now we’re in the thick of winter, a lot of us are tempted to reach for those oversized, bulky items of clothing to feel snug and comfortable throughout the day, however most of the time, we simply don’t feel fabulous in them – so it’s high time we give you our crash course on styling oversized clothing!
Up first, Joe’s top rules to styling oversized or baggy clothing should be your starting point – here's how to master the art of how to style oversized fits so you look on trend instead of on your way to bed!
As tempting as it might seem, don’t shop for larger sizes in the hope you can pass it off as ‘oversized’. It simply doesn’t work. Instead, shop for purposely oversized styles, as these have hems and structures designed for your size and shape, which achieves that loose look on its own.
If you’re first dipping your toes into the oversized trend, then try balancing your oversized piece with something fitted or structured, like a structured blazer or waistcoat over an oversized dress, or try a skirt and tights with an oversized jumper or jacket. This will achieve the oversized look while still leaving you feeling confident and looking on-trend.
If you’re going for the oversized look, consider big accessories to really carry the look throughout your outfit. Try a large tote bag, a big belt, an oversized chunky scarf, a wide-brimmed hat or a pair of large sunglasses (if the weather permits, that is!).
If you’re trying out an oversized jumper or t-shirt but still want to look put-together, make the entire ensemble smart-casual by simply tucking the front of your jumper into your waistband. Known as the French Tuck, the trick is to pull it out slightly to create a relaxed, flattering look across your stomach for a modern take on tucking your top in.
Layers are your best friend when going for oversized clothing. Opt for extra layers like a floaty kimono or a structured leather jacket over your oversized top to create a flattering silhouette. Don’t be afraid if your oversized top is longer than your jacket. That’s the key to achieving the look!
Skinny jeans are on their way out – it's all about the wide-legged look now! Giving a gorgeously tailored feel and looking fabulously flattering, wide-legged trousers are a hit all over the high street. You can find wide-legged style in tailored trousers, jeans and even PU styles If you’re hesitant to try going all-out oversized, pair these with a fitted top, blouse or graphic tee to achieve a balanced, smart look that you can dress up or down.
A slouchy boot is great for achieving the oversized look, and chunky boots have a fab shape that nods to the oversized style. If you feel like trying these out, start with a skirt and tights, but as you get more confident, try long boots with an oversized maxi dress for a fabulous boho look that’ll take you through the seasons!
Knits and jumpers are a fantastic way to pull off the oversized style while staying sumptuously toasty and snug throughout winter. The trick is to look for the shoulder seam and ensure it drops off the shoulder to achieve the look. You can also look out for balloon sleeves, off-the-shoulder styles or jumper dresses to keep in with the oversized look while staying in your comfort zone.
If you want to try out something totally different, a tunic could be the answer! A tunic is like a top, but longer, with a more dress-like shape. Tunics are super versatile and can be worn all year round by swapping out the bottoms. Try a pair of leggings or your favourite jeans, and experiment by tucking the front in or leaving it out. Experiment with this style to find what works best for you and your figure.
