The Story Behind Our Japanese Influenced Shirts

If you've been with Joe Browns for a while, you'll know that most of our styles are inspired by our travels around the world. From Aztec style shirts to Sicilian style homeware, we love to incorporate the rich textures and exotic designs we discover into our collections.

Last year, we travelled to Tokyo and fell in love with the breathtaking fashions and artwork produced by Japanese designers. So, we decided to bring some of the most unique elements and use them as inspiration for two of our spring summer men's shirts. For this style story, we spoke to our designers to uncover the tale behind them.

These captivating shirts are part of a small capsule range, inspired by our travels. With their elegant nature prints and contrast trims, both styles are a blend of Japanese themes and Joe Browns flair.

Our Brilliant Short Sleeve Bamboo Shirt features a striking bamboo bird print in tones of blue, on an off-white base. This creates a dreamy laid-back look that's enhanced by the relaxed shape of the shirt. We gave it our own touch by adding Japanese lettering, stitched in red, which translates to 'Browns'.

Designed in monochrome colours, our Brilliant Long Sleeve Blossom Shirt is adorned with dark florals that contrast handsomely with the pale ecru base. Like the bamboo shirt, we've added our signature red stitching, and embellished it with coconut effect buttons. 

Both shirts have been cut from 100% cotton fabric with a crinkle effect that makes them easy to throw on, without having to worry about creases. This casual design creates a free and easy look that's both breathable and versatile, the perfect addition to your summer wardrobe.

The stunning prints on our capsule shirts were influenced by Japanese artwork our creator came across on a holiday to Japan. Using the art as their muse, our designers merged their passion for Japanese styling with our own unique details to create the striking images, which were then printed onto the crinkle cotton shirts.

In the future, we want to build on this influence and produce similar designs, but with gritty images for an edgier biker look that you could complete with boots and a leather jacket.

Made to soak up the sun, these are the ultimate holiday shirts- just imagine kicking back with a beer on a scorching beach, shades on and sleeves rolled up. 

For a fresh, laid-back style that you can bring anywhere from quiet coastal escapes to vibrant party destinations like Ibiza, our designers recommend styling the shirts with white jeans or shorts and suede pumps.

Though these statement styles might clash with a blazer, you can still achieve a suave smart casual outfit by adding chinos and trousers, and swapping out the suede pumps for leather brogues.

A standout combination of khaki and camo, our Boutique Blossom Embroidered Cotton Jacket took inspiration from both classic military and army camo styles.

The incredible floral embroidery on the back was influenced by an original Japanese kimono, which was intricately embellished with a pink and white flower design.

The fusion of these inspirations creates a rebellious, edgy aesthetic with a touch of femininity.

We wanted this jacket to feel like something you might've picked up at a thrift store. So, we gave it a garment wash, for that worn, lived-in look, and a raw-edged trim to give it some soul!

There are pops of pink and purple in the embroidery to soften the grungy look.

Whilst the embroidery on the back is what makes the jacket so special, we wanted to leave room for you to make it your own. The front is simple, so you can add your own embellishments like patches or sew-on badges. 

With its lightweight fabric, this cotton jacket is great for casual spring styling.

Lean into that rebellious edge by throwing it on over a pair of black or dark wash jeans and a black blouse or t-shirt. Complete the 'devil-may-care' look with some chunky boots or trainers.
