We asked Sarah what blooms she’d recommend this spring…
We love spring for the bright beautiful spring bulbs, for the excitement of a new year and for bringing colour into our homes.
I have rounded up a few of our favourites here to give you a guide to spring blooms.
Ranunculus
These beautiful paper petaled round blooms are the most elegant flower. They are usually available late October - June but super gorgeous from March onwards. `They have up to one hundred petals and are related to the buttercup.
They have a long vase life and come in lots of colours from whites to dark pinks and peaches. They are all over Instagram and the popularity has made the price rocket over the past few years!
Snakes head fritillary
These special little flowers are covered with a chessboard design that makes them so striking. The petals form and snakes head shape. The stems are delicate and short so best used in little bud vases around the home. They can be easily grown in your garden too.
Tulips
Frilly, double, single, parrot tulips are just the most wonderful flowers. Some change colour as they open such as the variety flash point. One of our favourite places to buy them is a 5th generation British farm called Smith and Munson. Tulips keep growing when cut up to an inch a day, I love to see them do their thing and grow wild.
Mini daffodils / Tete a tete / Paperwhites
I love seeing these pop up all over, they are lovely to use on the bulb too to add a spring touch inside and out. Cover the bulbs with moss and pop in a dish for a simple decoration. ~The scent can be very strong so don’t use too many in an arrangement for a dinner table.
Hyacinths
I adore the colours and the scent of these in a garden. They can be overpowering for inside so only use one or two in a vase as its can too much indoors especially when on a dinner table. The blue is my favourite scent.
Anemones
Ohh these little beauties are the most incredible flower, so much detail. They are a really mindful flower that can make you stop in your tracks and just enjoy looking at them. They have a delicate stem and come very closed but open to the most beautiful bloom.
Icelandic Poppies
Such a delicate paper thin flower that brings so much drama to an arrangement. They come in a soft shell of sorts, like something from little shop of horrors but once peeled they unveil the most incredible bloom.
Blossom
I love having branches of blossom in my house waiting for the buds to burst in to flowers. You can display them in large lengths in vases to add drama and magic to your home.
TOP TIPS
In general spring flowers like lots of water and they don’t like flower food. Make sure to change the water every few days and re cut thee stems on an angle to help keep them living longer. Remove any leaves that are in the water to stop bacteria forming. Make sure your containers are cleaned with a little bleach. Spring flowers can look amazing as a mix but also in single varieties. Be careful when using mini daffs /paper whites as they can give out a sap when cut if using in a cut arrangement with other flowers I would first cut to size, place in a separate vase let the sap dissipate then move to the mixed arrangement without re cutting.
