Your bedroom, as the name suggests, is all about the bed. Not only does your bed need to be blissfully comfy, it should also be a showstopper packed full of prints and patterns to bring personality to your sleep space.

A bed really can make a huge impact - it’s the stand-out piece within the bedroom after all - so have fun choosing the bedroom basics. All snooze-worthy beds need a heavenly mattress, a deluxe duvet and plump pillows. The bed of your dreams has to look good, sure, but to really have that ‘I never want to leave my bed again’ vibe it’ll need to feel extra cosy too. 

Choose the bedding that feels right for you and your sleep style. Do you know your mattress type? Joe’s top tip: Switch up your duvet at the same time you swap over your seasonal capsule wardrobe! No one wants to sweat through the summer in a hefty 13.5 tog duvet or shiver through the winter in a lightweight 7.5 tog duvet either. When you break out your summer or winter wardrobe, pack up your duvet and replace it with the new season’s version so you’ll always be ready for a comfy night’s sleep.

You’ll need to start your styling mission with a fabulous fitted sheet. They just pop on over your mattress (or your mattress protector and topper if you’re really going all out for a quality night’s sleep), with elasticated corners that make sure your fitted sheet stays snug all night long. 

Most fitted sheet colours fall somewhere between white, grey and black, but we reckon it’s time to throw out the greige and put a pop of personality back into your fitted sheet choice. 

Think about your fave shade or pick out the most prominent colour in your duvet cover to help you choose a vibrant fitted sheet that’ll really make a statement. Printed fitted sheets are another super stylish way to spruce up your bed. You’ll only see hints of the gorgeous fitted sheet once your bed’s all beautifully made up - it’s only when you climb in that you’ll really feel the full effect. ‘More is more’ is our motto when it comes to choosing a fitted sheet - a bright and bold choice will give you a mood-lifting surprise every time you peel your duvet cover back.

Your bed will take up most of your bedroom space, so adding a funky duvet cover and pillowcases is a great way to make your bed a fashionable focal point. Choose a duvet cover that complements your bed frame and the rest of your room decor. If you have a bright feature wall for example, pick a duvet cover from a similar colour palette rather than a contrasting shade.

Our top tip is to pick out those lovely accent colours from your room decor and choose cushions and throws to match. If you have a bold pink lampshade or a brightly coloured set of photo frames, for example, choose cushions to match so the eye is drawn to all the intricate details of the bedroom. 

You could also take even more inspo from our theming suggestions by selecting a cushion or throw that matches your room’s overall vibe. Going for an all-out boho look? A vibrant, colourful cushion packed full of boho spirit could be a great choice. If you’re transforming your room into a opulent Victorian-inspired boudoir, however, a velour cushion embroidered with a stag or pheasant design could be the perfect find.

A reversible duvet cover has a different print or fabric on each side, meaning there’ll be a whole new pattern to look at with a simple flip of your duvet cover! They’re a great choice if you’re always looking to update your style or can’t quite decide which duvet cover you want to go for.   

Cotton is without a doubt the most luxurious choice for bed linen. It’s a low-maintenance material that’ll last you for years. Plus, the natural nature of cotton means it’s breathable and temperature-regulating, so you’ll be able to keep cool in the summer and toasty warm in the winter! 

Joe Browns bedding is crafted from either 100% cotton or 100% cotton sateen fabric, where cotton fibre is woven in a sateen weave to give it a glorious sheen and super silky feel. 

A thread count between 200-600 is considered best for bedding. It’s that perfect sweet spot - not too heavy whilst still giving you that cosy warm feeling. 

Thread count is basically the number of horizontal and vertical threads in one square inch of your bed linen’s fabric which determines how tightly woven (aka heavy) your duvet cover, pillowcase or fitted sheet might be.

If you’re looking for a way to stay cool in the summer months, a duvet cover can be used as a covering on its own. It’s essentially just two thin layers of lovely soft fabric, and you don’t necessarily need to fill it with a duvet - it’s all about your personal preference and finding the right sleep temperature for you. 

There’s no hard and fast rule but, generally speaking, choose an odd number of cushions if you’re going for a laid-back look or an even number of cushions layered up on each side of the bed for a smart and symmetrical vibe. 

Place the largest of your cushions at the back and have some fun arranging your cushions into the best position. The trick is to choose cushions that add intrigue and variety - a set of identical cushions will do nothing for your space! Pick a range of interesting textures and printed cushions that create a beautifully vibrant look when grouped together.
