We take our environmental commitments very seriously and are continually reviewing our processes and the expectations we place on our suppliers. We are working towards reducing the impact our operations have on the environment, both at head office and in our stores – in the UK and in our wider supply chain.

We have developed a set of principles and standards that both we and our wider supply chain must observe, in order to work in an environmentally friendly manner. We have also looked closely at the paper and packaging we use as well as how we manage items of waste.

Joe Browns Principles

We encourage suppliers to help protect the environment, to conserve natural resources and to conduct their business in an environmentally responsible and efficient manner.

We do this through five key principles:

  1. We expect our factories to share our commitments in managing their own environmental impacts.
  2. We believe that it’s our responsibility to support our factories in doing this as effectively as possible.
  3. While we expect suppliers to comply with local law, we also expect them to follow the spirit of the law, taking a proactive rather than a reactive approach to compliance.
  4. Where there are differences between our minimum standards and their respective laws, whichever gives the greater environmental benefit should be followed.
  5. We have started to work collaboratively with different stakeholders to make sure this happens, and also to put in place the best ways to measure the impact we are making.

General Environmental Standards

As part of our factory onboarding process, we expect factories to minimise any environmental impacts of making our products.

We expect all entities in the supply chain to:

  1. Create organisational responsibility for environmental management
  2. Take practical steps to reduce their environmental impacts

Water & Air Pollution

In addition to our principles, we also encourage other aspects of environmentally friendly behaviour:

We do this through five key principles:

  1. We encourage our suppliers to conserve water
  2. We ask them to ensure they have strict chemicals management processes in place, and that all associates wear PPE for this purpose
  3. We request that all waste water is treated before discharge
  4. We ask that licenses are obtained to control air pollution
  5. We also request that solid waste is disposed of legally

The Impact of Our Packaging

We are always looking for ways we can reduce our environmental impact and, in future, all our carrier bags, parcel bags, and hangers will be made from recycled materials.

Washing at Low Temperature

Joe Browns uses high quality materials to make its remarkable clothing collections and all our products are tested to ensure they are fit-for-purpose and perform to the highest standards. Therefore we are able to encourage customers to reduce washing temperatures to 30 degrees to lessen their impact on the environment when keeping clothes clean.

Garments That Stay in Wardrobes Longer

We are not a fast fashion brand – but we do create beautiful garments that are timeless in their appeal and they therefore stand the test of time in customers' wardrobes. We also have various initiatives that help us reduce the risk of items going to landfill.

Buying closer to the season helps minimise the levels of stock we are left with at the season end, and, rather than discarding inferior quality products, we encourage local community groups to collect and repurpose the clothing, which also helps us to give back a little to those around us. We donate thousands of garments to local charitable causes – St Gemma’s Hospice has already raised over £325,000 from the clothing they have received from Joe Browns!

Our Catalogues

The paper for all of our catalogues comes from PEFC certified forests. PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) is a non-profit organisation, dedicated to promoting sustainable forest management, ensuring that timber and non-timber forest products are produced with respect for the highest ecological, social and ethical standards. We also have very clear ways for customers to opt out of receiving our mailings to reduce the volume we print and post out annually.
