With lockdown restrictions far behind us, there’s no better time to let yourself loose and give your Mum a Mother’s Day to Remember!

If the usual breakfast-in-bed or brunch is feeling old hat for a special treat, we’re on hand with 10 unique ways you can celebrate your Mum this year. Read on to find something you can enjoy together and talk about for years to come.

Get Crafty

If your mum is the crafty sort, why not build a couple of crafting kits to spend the day crafting away? Ideas are cross stitch kits, yarn for knitting or crocheting, wire and flowers for a spring wreath or even seedling starter kits for growing flowers and vegetables!

The possibilities are endless with crafts, especially during spring time to welcome in the warmer weather. Crafts are a great way to do something a little different while chatting away with endless cups of tea. If that’s not the true definition of quality time – we don’t know what is!

Lend a Hand

If your mum belongs to a volunteer community, why not spend the day volunteering together for a cause that’s close to your mum’s heart? This way, you can give back to the community and spend some quality time with your mum.

If that’s not persuasion enough, you’ll give mum a breath of fresh air in her charitable work and make her proud to show you off to her colleagues!

Cook Up a Storm!

If your siblings are on hand for a Mother’s Day dinner, why not treat her to a multi-course dinner of your family’s favourite recipes with a new generation twist!  Every mum has a special dish you’ve loved since a child, so why not take a trip down memory lane and show your appreciation for your mum as a family.

If siblings aren’t on hand, why not learn your favourite family recipe from your mum, or cook a whole new kind of dinner together? It’s just another excuse to break out the vino!

Pizza Your Heart

Speaking of cooking, a pizza party is always a major hit! Whip up some pizza dough in advance and grab some pizza topping essentials to have the family build their own pizzas. Joe’s foodies are always on hand with a recipe! Try our thin and crispy Neapolitan pizza dough, with a super-cool trick to emulate a pizza oven from your own standard oven.

  • 325ml warm water
  • 500g plain flour
  • 7g sachet yeast
  • 1 tsp salt
  • (Optional, but really tasty) Semolina Flour

  1. In a bowl, add 500g plain flour and salt, and give this a good mix until combined.
  2. Empty your sachet of yeast into the warm water and give it a stir to activate the yeast.
  3. Slowly pour the yeast mixture into your flour and start kneading.
  4. Tip onto a floured surface and knead for a further 5 – 10 minutes. Stretch the dough out as far as it can go, then roll it back in on itself for optimum stretchiness!
  5. Divide into 6 pieces and place on a tray. Add a sprinkle of flour to the top of each one and cover with a clean, damp tea towel. Leave for 1.5 hours to prove.
  6. To emulate a classic pizza oven, preheat the oven to max, then when fully preheated, flip the grill on. This allows the oven to be hot enough to cook the bottom of the pizza base, while the grill cooks the pizza from the top. This is the true Neapolitan way, mi amor!
  7. Dust your surface and piece of dough with semolina flour, roll out your dough and build the pizza!
  8. Place in the oven for 3 – 5 minutes, or until the toppings are bubbling and the dough is a light golden colour with rustic dark brown spots.

Blow-out for ‘out-out’!

If you’re planning on a girl’s night out with your mum, take it one step further and book a hair or makeup session to give your mum an extra dash of diva. A good old fashioned blow-dry will have your mum feeling glam and confident for your night out, plus it gives plenty of opportunity to sip on prosecco and gossip while you’re both getting ready!

Bring the bar in

If ‘out-out’ isn’t on the cards for you and mum, bring the bar to you with a cocktail night! A simple shaker setup is all it takes for you both to take a look through a few tasty cocktail or mocktail recipes to make together.

If you don't feel confident making drinks, either hire someone for the job, or simply take a look at YouTube videos to find a step-by-step for your mum’s favourite cocktail!

Don’t Need No Man-icure

No boys allowed! Pamper your mum with an at-home manicure this year. It’s an amazing way to spend some real quality time painting nails and chatting. Go the extra mile with a manicure set and spend that extra time on her manicure. From cuticles to the top coat, a manicure is always a wonderful gesture so your mum can feel fabulous from fingers to toes.

Take it one step further and turn up armed with face masks, cucumber slices and your favourite loungewear for the ultimate pamper session!

Antiques Roadtrip

No, not the daytime TV show! Why not take antiquing on the road to find something that needs a little TLC? Upcycling old furniture is a great way to put your own unique spin on interior décor and create a one-of-a-kind piece that’ll act as a great talking point when your mum has guests over!

All you’ll need is some sandpaper, chalk paint and varnish which can be bought from any craft or hardware store. Additionally, decoupage glue and petals are a wonderful way to get extra crafty on upcycling!

Whether it’s her kids or y-orchids

Whether it’s for your mum or something to do with your own kiddos on Mother’s Day, why not bring the brigade along to a flower arranging class? In the last year, flower arranging and wreath making has become all the rage!

Whichever you choose, flower arranging takes the classic bouquet of flowers one step further for Mother’s Day, so you can create something special while making memories with your nearest and dearest.

What’s on the cards

While it’s not for everyone, a truly unique way to spend a day with your mum is to visit a psychic or a medium. Whether it’s a palm reading, tarot reading, angel cards or tea-leaves, it’s a sure way to do something a little out of the ordinary on Mother’s Day.

Whether you’re a real sceptic or true believer, it’ll certainly spark conversation afterwards over some lunch! Other new age options for the spiritual folk are reiki or crystal healing or a one-on-one guided meditation with a spiritual guide. It’s certainly not one to miss among those mystic mums!

Whatever the plans for you and mum on Mother’s Day, we hope you’ve found some inspiration for a really special one this year.

You’re also more than welcome to take all the credit for these ideas – we won’t tell. Mum’s the word!

Happy Mother’s Day!

Joe
