We can’t believe it’s almost pancake day already! It’s really ‘creped’ up on us! Sweet or savoury; there’s a perfect pancake topping that’s even ‘batter’ than your typical lemon and sugar (even though it’s a total classic!) so we’re taking you through our top pancake toppings in time for pancake day! (Or really, any day – because pancakes are the best!)

Whichever way you make your pancakes, simply use these simple, yet delicious toppings for a truly delectable pancake day!

1. Nutella & Strawberry Chocolate Chip

This one is for the chocolate lovers. Simply sprinkle chocolate chips into the pancake batter just as it’s added to the pan for added chocolate yumminess. You can also substitute a small amount of flour for cocoa powder for chocolate pancakes, too!

Topping Ingredients

Nutella

Strawberries, sliced

Icing sugar

Method:

Simply spread a layer of nutella on top of a pancake, followed by strawberries and a dusting of icing sugar, and repeat until you have a pile of delicious pancakes!

1. Greek Blueberry Pancakes

In a similar fashion to the chocolate chip pancakes, add your blueberries to the pancake batter just as it’s added to the pan to incorporate the berry into the pancake itself – just make sure to save extra for the topping!

Ingredients:

Greek Yoghurt

Honey

Blueberries

Pecan nuts

Method:

Add the blueberries to the pancake batter on the pan, cook and add honey and pecan nuts in between the pancake stacks.

Top your pancake stack with honey and a generous amount of Greek yoghurt, and top with fresh blueberries.

3. The Savoury – Pancakes, beans and bacon!

If you know, you know. While it sounds grim to some, it’s actually amazing! We usually associate pancakes with sweet toppings, but because of the batter (which is really just Yorkshire puddings cooked differently) it makes an amazing base for savoury breakfast sides too! Plus, if you love a bit of sweet and savoury, there’s a secret ingredient that really makes all the difference!

Ingredients

Streaky bacon

A tin of beans

Butter

Secret Ingredient: Maple Syrup

Method:

Cook your pancakes plain and top each layer with a little butter. Heat your beans and fry your bacon to taste. Add to the plate of pancakes and top the pancake stack and bacon with maple syrup. (This syrup is optional, but don’t knock it ‘til you try it!)

Other options to switch our is switch the beans for scrambled egg, or even have them all and add a sausage or two for a full English!

4. Caramelised Banana

This one is a total winner! Nutty, crunchy, sticky and oozy, this is a decadent delight! The beauty is you can swap out a load of ingredients with something you prefer!

If you want all of that and more, then pour some pancake batter into the pan, scoop some chocolate spread onto the pancake and add another scoop of pancake batter over the top to ‘stuff’ your pancake with chocolate!

Ingredients:

2 Bananas, sliced

Maple syrup or honey

Chopped hazelnuts, peanuts, almonds or nut of choice

2 tbsp sugar

Method:

Cook your pancakes however you prefer. To keep them warm, transfer to a baking tray and keep in the oven on a low temperature.

In a frying pan, add 2 tbsp sugar. Heat until the sugar melts and turns a light brown colour and starts to bubble. Add the banana slices and toss in the sugar mixture. If the mixture starts to harden, add some maple syrup, honey or a drizzle of water until the mixture turns syrupy again.

Transfer the caramelised banana slices to your pancake stack, top with your syrup or honey and chopped nuts. Finally, dig in!
